Wie in den Filmen Hollywoods haben auch die Gemälde die Hinwendung zu phantastischen Motiven vollzogen. Indem die Formen des europäischen Surrealismus sowie des phantastischen Realismus, mit der amerikanischer Popkultur gekreuzt werden, ist der sogenannte -im engeren Sinne- Pop-Surrealismus um ca. 1988 entstanden. Über die Internetmedien wird es über die ganze Welt verbreitet . Es breitet sich aus wie BSE. Die bekanntesten Vertreter kommen,wie schon Andy Warhol ,aus dem Graphikdesign., zB. :Mark Ryden,Walton Ford , Ana Bagayan.

Ohne Warhol, Jeff Koons und Murakami ist diese Kunst in der Hinwendung an die Massen nicht denkbar. Vorläufer sind Symbolismus, Surrealismus , Phantastischer Realismus LowBrow und Outsider; jegliche Form die phantastische Züge beinhaltet. Art. Michael Jackson ist die Personifikation ihrer ästhetischen Ideale. Diese Basieren auf dem Rokoko und dem Symbolismus. Der Popsurrealsimus- als antiintellektuelle Richtung, wendet sich an ein Massenpublikum und findet seinen Massenmarkt im Hollywood Film.

Pop Surrealism entstand als als Anitkultur und Underground in Los Angeles in den späten 1970ger Jahren entstand. Es ist eine Bewegung die die Formen und Praktiken der Alltagskultur, Tattoo, Hobbykunst des Undergrounds und des Comics benutzt. Als > hot-rod street culture< und >subculture art< oder > housewife surrrealism< ist es auch benannt. Das Magazin „Juxtapoz" ist mittlerweile die am häufigsten gelesene Kunstzeitschrift in den USA.
