Emmett Williams, amerikanischer Dichter und Perfomance-Künstler, gehörte zu den Begründern der Fluxus-Bewegung,die massgeblich die Kunst nach 1945 beeinflusst. Aktionskunst, Dichtung und Musik formten sein Gesamtwerk. Seine "Little Men" brachten Fluxus nach Potsdam und zogen am 21. April 2008 in das "Fluxus+Museum" ein.Er arbeitete von 1957 bis 1959 im Darmstädter Kreis für Konkrete Poesie und der Pariser Domaine Poétique. Als 1962 George Maciunas Gründungs-Happening in Wiesbaden stattfand, war Emmett Williams dabei. Fluxus sollte Formen des Happenings und der Aktionskunst, der Dichtung und Musik zu einem Gesamtwerk vereinen und den fließenden Übergang zwischen Kunst und Leben betonen.1966 bis 1970 war er Chefredakteur der legendären „Something Else Press“, New York. Seine Gedichte und Anthologien, vor allem zur konkreten Poesie, zählen zu den wichtigsten Beiträgen in diesem Bereich. Zu seinen bedeutsamsten Werken gehört der erotische Gedichtband „sweethearts“ (1966). Sein autobiografisches Werk „My Life in Flux - and Vice Versa“ wurde 1992 veröffentlicht. 1990 wurde Emmett Williams zum Präsident des Internationalen Künstlermuseums im polnischen Lodz ernannt und 1996 mit dem Hannah-Höch-Preis der Berlinischen Galerie für sein Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet. Emmett Williams lebte den überwiegenden Teil seines Lebens in Europa, zuletzt mit seiner Frau, der Künstlerin Ann Noël in Berlin.
